October 4 - Saint Francis of Assisi

Francis was born in Umbria in the year 1181. He was the son of a rich merchant named Pietro di Bernardone, and his mother, Pica. In his early years, he was known as a leader in the escapades of the town's youth. He was not satisfied with his life so, he began to spend his time solitude, prayers and meditations. Later, Francis founded the Franciscan Order. Pope Innocent III approved Francis' Order. The Work of Francis and his followers expanded and grew. Francis founded another branch of his order for women in the year 1212 and they called it the Poor Clares. On October 3, 1226, at the age of 45, Francis received his eternal reward. He was canonized in the year 1228. We celebrate his feast day on October 4.
